Today was a challenging but rewarding day. We had some steep climbs into the hills above Lake Champlain with more fantastic views. The towns along the way are very quaint historic hamlets and well maintained. We had lunch in Westport and decided to spend the night in Essex at the historic Essex Inn. It is charming and the dinner at the restaurant was delicious. This is as far as we are going on the Empire State Trail and tomorrow we take the ferry across the lake to pick up a car in Burlington. The trail is well worth the effort and overall is very well done. Today the shoulders were very narrow which was a bit nerve wracking but in general the cars gave us a wide berth. We highly recommend the trail!
